Ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has suggested that Chelsea sacking Thomas Tuchel is a “knee-jerk reaction” as his exit has come “too early”.

Tuchel reached 100 games in charge of Chelsea on Tuesday evening as they faced Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League group stages.

This is usually a celebratory affair for managers but this was not the case for Tuchel.

Pressure has been building on the German with Chelsea winning just three of their first six league games. They also have one draw and two defeats in the league.

The Blues were beaten 1-0 by Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia. This was deserved as several of their players were far from their best.

The Londoners spent over £250m this summer on new players in what was the first transfer window of Todd Boehly’s ownership.

Though Tuchel has been punished for their disappointing start to the new campaign as on Wednesday morning it was announced that he has been sacked.

Chelsea already have their eyes on potential replacements for Tuchel. Brighton & Hove Albion boss Graham Potter is set to be approached about the role.

Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane are also being linked with the vacant manager’s job.

Murphy has suggested though that Chelsea were wrong to sack Tuchel as it is a “knee-jerk reaction”:

“I’m really shocked, really surprised. I like him, he’s intelligent, he’s one of the top managers out there,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“I think it’s too early, that’s my gut feeling. I think it’s a knee-jerk reaction to a game last night that they dominated and would have won nine times out of ten.

“You look at the two centre-halves they’ve brought in, he’s just brought in a centre-forward they’ve been crying out for, N’Golo Kante has been out.

“Yeah it’s not a perfect start and their away form has been poor and a couple of his interviews have been a bit cagey, a bit whiny, but I’m not sure it’s the right thing.”

Ex-Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has also waded in on Tuchel’s departure. He thinks it is clear that his replacement is already lined up:

“They’ve obviously got someone lined up, they’ve made a decision, and God forbid I hope it’s not [Mauricio] Pochettino, but it may well be,” Jordan added.

“They’ve made a decision, it doesn’t feel like a footballing decision.

“Even I, who have been a major advocate of his, but I’ve been talking about him in less glowing terms, I described him as an agitated Pepperami man the other day.

“Look, they haven’t been great, but Tuchel has enough currently in footballing terms to have been given an opportunity to correct this slight malaise.”
