Protests turn violent in Solomon Islands

Video showed several buildings still smouldering in thick smoke. Large amounts of debris was also strewn on streets.

Foreign countries are responsible for stoking unrest that has led to violent protests in the small South Pacific island country, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said on Friday, but he declined to name the countries.

Sogavare's comments came as Australian police officers arrived in the Solomon Islands, after Australia accepted a requested from him for help in guarding critical infrastructure.
