"Vaccines should be optional," said protester Tony Conrad as he gathered with others outside parliament on Tuesday (December 21).
For people like Runa Pentrindenaru, making the so-called "green pass" mandatory in the workplace would equal a mandatory vaccination program.
"Making the vaccination compulsory is limiting the liberty of movement, of education, and work in Romania," the protester said.
Romania, the EU's second-least vaccinated country, experienced its deadliest wave of the pandemic so far in October and early November.
There have been 1,798,629 infections and 58,232 coronavirus-related deaths reported in the country since the pandemic began.
