Protesters Gather at NYC Subway Station Following Jordan Neely Death

The death of Jordan Neely, a New York City subway rider who was placed in a chokehold by another passenger on May 1, was ruled as a homicide, local media reported on May 3, citing the city’s medical examiner.

Footage by Christopher Leon Johnson shows a small group of protesters gathered at the Broadway-Lafayette subway station calling for “justice” for Neely’s death.

Neely was a 30-year-old homeless man who had once earned a living as a Michael Jackson impersonator, the New York Times reported.

The passenger who held Neely in a chokehold for several minutes was released without charge on May 2, pending further investigation, according to a New York Post report citing police. Credit: Christopher Leon Johnson via Storyful

- At 3:00 PM, you know what I'm saying? So going back from the old scorecard--

- When we walk out of this train station today, I want everybody to understand that he would never have been on the train if he was housed.

- That's right!

- The answer to this is housing. We need to house every New Yorker. Eric Adams knows this. He understands that every New Yorker deserves a house. And every time he throws cops at the homeless, he is answering the people that don't even take the train.

- That's right!

- He's answering the people who live in those thousands of dollar apartments that we cannot afford! So when you leave this train, and you walk out of this station, I want you to know that the answer that we are fighting for, that we are all talking about, is housing.

- All right, so what up? This is Chris here. So I'm here, right here. We're joining a rally. Everybody-- so be one side. You've got pick the side and shit. They're not letting anybody walk from the rally.

- Hold the line!

- There is no--

- You cannot-- you touched me first. You touched me first. You are not allowed--

- You better watch yourself, you better watch yourself.

- You see, they ain't letting nobody inside. Not press, nobody. Not even people from New York Post. New York Post can't go through. A major paper, they can't go through. Crazy.
