Protesters Gather in Front of Police Line in Myanmar's Capital

Protesters and police faced off in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyitaw, on February 8, as protests continued in several cities against the military takeover of the country.

This footage, by Thet Naing Htun, shows protesters facing a line of officers near one of the city’s landmarks, a statue of revolutionary leader Bogyoke Aung San.

The BBC reported that police used water cannons against protesters at the site. Video of the incident was widely circulated.

Local news reports said protesters were calling for the release of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other elected officials. They were detained following the military’s allegations of voting irregularities in a November election won by Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy. Credit: Thet Naing Htun via Storyful
