Protesters Clash With Police in Senegal After Opposition Leader's Arrest

Protesters clashed with police in Senegal on March 5 following the arrest of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko.

Sonko, a former presidential candidate who leads the opposition Pastef party, was arrested on Wednesday.

According to reports, one person was killed in protests in the country’s southern Casamance region on Thursday.

Local media, citing a lawyer for Sonko, said the 2019 presidential candidate was being “charged with rape and making threats.” Sonko has denied the allegations, which he says are politically motivated.
