Protest in Sudan kills at least 7, Japan's Princess Mako marries non-royal, Signs of first planet found outside galaxy

AKIKO FUJITA: In our world view today, Sudan's top general defended the military coup, saying the actions were taken to avoid a civil war. Soldiers arrested Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok on Monday and dissolved the government, which split power between the military and civilians. Clashes that followed killed at least seven people and injured 140 others.

The takeover came after weeks of increased tensions between the rivaling leaders over the pace of Sudan's transition to democracy. A popular uprising deposed longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir two years ago. The top general says the prime minister is being held for his own safety, but will likely be released soon.

Over in Japan, Royal Princess Mako married her college sweetheart after a rocky four-year engagement. The princess first announced her engagement to Kei Komuro, who's a commoner, back in 2017, but the public quickly turned on the couple after tabloids revealed Komuro's mother owed more than $35,000 in debt to an ex-boyfriend.

The scandal prompted the couple to postpone their marriage. And the princess and Komuro turned down the $1.3 million that is usually gifted to women in the royal family amid allegations he was simply marrying her for money. The two plan to live right here in New York, where Komuro works at a law firm.

And in news that takes us far outside of our galaxy, astronomers have discovered a planet 28 million light years away from the Milky Way. The planet is reportedly the size of Saturn. It was first discovered by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. It is located in the Messier's 51 Galaxy, which, apparently, is also known as the Whirlpool Galaxy.

Astronomers have discovered nearly 5,000 exoplanets to date, but all of them have been in the Milky Way galaxy until now. And Zack, I would be lying if I said I knew everything that I just mentioned here astronomers have said, but pretty cool to see any discovery of a new planet.
