Pro-Democracy Demonstrators March in Sao Paulo Following Congress Attack

Pro-democracy demonstrators marched in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on January 9, the day after supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s congress.

The march took place along Paulista Avenue, in front of the Museum of Art of Sao Paulo, and many marchers were seen carrying flags for the Central Unica dos Trabalhadores (CUT), a large trade union organization. Protesters chanted “no amnesty” referring to those who stormed congress, called for Bolsonaro to be imprisoned, and carried a large banner with the word “democracy” on it, videos show.

Local news reports said the event was organized by the political and social movement organizations Povo Sem Medo, Brasil Popular, and Colisao Negra por Direitos. Credit: @jckmidia via Storyful
