Poor Princess Beatrice. As if planning a wedding wasn't stressful enough, the Queen's eldest granddaughter has had to do it against a backdrop of multiple royal scandals.
While the past few months have seen two high-profile royal divorces and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle relinquish their 'senior royal' roles, there's one story in particular which has had a significant impact on Beatrice's wedding plans: the scandal surrounding her father, Prince Andrew. And the furore has meant she reportedly had to change her wedding date - twice.
Back in September, 31-year-old Princess Beatrice got engaged to Italian property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in Italy. But in November, her father gave an ill-advised television interview amid growing concern around his connections to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The conversation, with Newsnight's Emily Maitlis, was roundly condemned as a disaster, despite Andrew’s insistence that he had done nothing wrong.
Of course, the uproar raised questions about his daughter's wedding, and when the Duke of York stepped back from royal duties in November, the fallout meant his daughter's wedding plans changed significantly, according to People.
A source told the American media outlet: “The date was changed two times to adjust [around Andrew’s scandal]... It will be smaller than the original plan.”
It's suspected that the wedding will be smaller than her younger sister, Princess Eugenie's. The couple have also decided against a carriage procession, which “is keeping with their wishes for a more low-key” affair, the source says.
The nuptials have now been confirmed to take place on 29th May at the Chapel Royal in St. James's Palace, with the Queen granting Beatrice and Edoardo the use of Buckingham Palace for their reception.
Prince Andrew did not attend Beatrice and Edoardo's engagement party at London's Chiltern Firehouse last year, but he is thought to be walking his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day.
