Princess Anne is home from the hospital after a five-night stay, but her return to royal duties is still up in the air.

King Charles' sister, 73, was admitted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol following an "incident" at her Gatcombe Park home on June 23. She sustained a concussion and minor injuries that were consistent with a potential impact from a horse's head or legs, but the exact details of the accident are unable to be ascertained due to her concussion. The Telegraph also reported that Princess Anne was suffering memory loss related to the accident, though it is thought to be temporary.

The Princess Royal is now continuing her recovery at home and receiving rehabilitation support. There is no date set for her return to public duty, which will occur when her medical team recommends it is safe to do so.

Following the incident, Princess Anne had to clear her work schedule for the week. She missed the state banquet at Buckingham Palace held in honor of the Japanese state visit to the U.K. on June 25 and was unable to fly to Canada for a planned visit.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said on June 24, "Her Royal Highness sends her apologies to any who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result."

Her hospitalization and recovery mean the royal family's "hardest-working" member is on the sidelines. Princess Anne is highly praised for her strong work ethic and often records the highest number of royal engagements in a calendar year.

"She just gets on with it, often carrying out multiple engagements in one day,” Queen Elizabeth’s former press spokesman Dickie Arbiter previously told The Telegraph.

In 2023, Queen Elizabeth's only daughter reportedly racked up 457 engagements, eclipsing even King Charles' count. Arbiter clarified that "much of what the King does is behind the scenes, in meetings and going through his red boxes, which doesn’t warrant a mention in the Court Circular."

Princess Anne's accident is the latest in a string of health-related setbacks for the British royal family.

King Charles and Kate Middleton both started the year with procedures, with the 75-year-old monarch being treated for an enlarged prostate while the Princess of Wales, 42, underwent abdominal surgery. Both later announced they had been diagnosed with cancer and would postpone public-facing duties as they underwent treatment, marking the first time two senior working royals simultaneously had cancer.

Princess Anne continued to represent the monarchy along with Queen CamillaPrince WilliamPrince EdwardSophie the Duchess of Edinburgh and others.

King Charles resumed public royal work in late April, and the royal family reunited at Trooping the Colour on June 15 when Princess Kate made her first public appearance in nearly six months. However, palace aides stressed that Kate's appearance didn't mean a full return to royal duties. Any upcoming outings will be based on when she feels able and with the guidance of her medical team.
