In what sounds like a move straight out of a sitcom or '00s rom-com, a royal insider explains that while they were dating, Prince William and Kate Middleton would use pseudonyms when they booked hotel rooms in an effort to keep their getaways under wraps. And while being some of the most photographed people in the entire world may seem like a daunting experience, they tried their best to stay out of the spotlight when they wanted to get away from it all—and whether or not it worked is still up for debate.

According to biographer Robert Jobson, who just published his new book Catherine, the Princess of Wales: The Biography, it was a well-known secret that the two went full-on Hollywood for their code names, which channeled some A-list actors in their most memorable roles.

For some secret vacays and escapades, William felt like they needed to use Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie-inspired nicknames.

"For weekends and holidays, he'd often whisk Catherine off to Highgrove or Sandringham or to a cottage on the Balmoral estate," Jobson wrote. "Occasionally, they checked into hotels, using the names Mr. and Mrs. Smith—which doubtless fooled no one."

But the movie may not have been the real reason behind the choice. That iconic film didn't come out until 2005 and Kate and William started dating in 2001. The Mirror notes that Smith is just a very common name in the U.K.

In 2011, Andrew Morton wrote in his book, William and Catherine, that the two also used the pseudonyms "Martin and Rose Middleton" during a vacation to the Seychelles.

Jobson's new book also revealed William's other nickname, which he often used at school.

"In 2001, William quietly slipped into undergraduate life at St Andrews, where he used the pseudonym 'Steve' in a rather pathetic attempt to stay under the radar," Jobson shared. The Scottish Sun reported William hoped to have a "relatively normal experience" as a student and that the name was just one of the things he did so that he "wouldn't draw attention to himself."
