Prince Harry Thought King Charles Would Have Forgiven Him For Everything By Now
Things may be beyond repair at this point.
There's no telling exactly how long Prince Harry has been on the outs with King Charles and the rest of the royal family—it all depends on whether you consider the beginning to be the release of Spare or Harry's decamping to America—but according to sources close to the royals, the Duke of Sussex thought that by now, things would have smoothed over. According to Tom Quinn, author of Scandals of the Royal Palaces: An Intimate Memoir of Royals Behaving Badly, Harry assumed that he'd be forgiven for everything he'd done, from the Oprah interview to the memoir, his father would apologize, and everybody would live happily ever after. Of course, that's not exactly how things have played out just yet.
"Despite all his criticisms, Harry always assumed he would be forgiven by his father," Quinn told The Mirror. "He thought Charles would make amends for the hurt that—in Harry’s view—justified the criticisms."
Quinn went on to say that Charles has managed to keep his composure and hasn't addressed anything regarding Harry to the public. However, behind the gilded gates of Buckingham Palace, things may be a bit different. People following the royals know that Harry did pay a visit to his father earlier this year after Charles shared that he'd been diagnosed with cancer, but during a trip to London to commemorate the anniversary of the Invictus Games, the two didn't make time to meet up.
"Despite Harry’s attacks on the royal family his father has avoided responding by attacking his son publicly, but privately, King Charles is furious. So much so that he is now refusing to take calls from his son," Quinn added.
While there isn't a resolution in sight, there could be hope if Princess Beatrice has her way. Sources say that she could be instrumental in mending the rift between Harry and his brother, Prince William, and other members of the royal family.
"[Princess] Beatrice could act as a peacemaker for Harry, William, and Charles," Grant Harrold, King Charles's former royal butler, said in an interview with Express. "She would be someone to initiate peace in the family. She’s close to both William and Harry, as well as the king—and they trust her."
