Pretty Little Liars is getting the reboot treatment, and now it's been confirmed that we're already guaranteed a full season of drama, mysteries and secrets.

New streaming service HBO Max has given a direct-to-series order to the new Pretty Little Liars reboot, which comes from Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina creator Robert Aguirre-Sacasa.

Titled Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, the reboot will follow a new generation of Liars in a town called Millwood and is described as a "dark, coming-of-rage, horror-tinged drama" (via Entertainment Weekly).

According to the synopsis, the show will follow a group of teenage girls who find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant 20 years after a series of tragic events ripped the town of Millwood apart.

In the present day, the girls will be made to pay for the secret sin their parents committed two decades ago – as well as for their own.

"We're such huge fans of what I Marlene King and her iconic cast created, we knew that we had to treat the original series as #CANON and do something different," Aguirre-Sacasa and co-producer Lindsay Calhoon Bring said in a statement.

"So we're leaning into the suspense and horror in this reboot, which hopefully will honour what the fans loved about the hit series, while weaving in new, unexpected elements."

And while Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin won't be taking place in Rosewood, the series will still exist within the existing PLL universe, which means it's entirely possible we could be seeing the familiar faces of Spencer, Aria, Hanna, Alison and Emily pop up in the new series too.

"Roberto and Lindsay are expanding the Pretty Little Liars universe with more murder, mysteries, and scandal, and we can't wait," HBO Max's Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey added.

Based on the books by Sara Shepard, Pretty Little Liars originally ran between 2010-2017, coming to an end after seven seasons.

The show inspired two spin-off series, including Ravenswood and, more recently, Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, but both were cancelled after just a single season.

This isn't the only teen drama reboot in the works at HBO Max either, as the streaming service will also be home to a new Gossip Girl series centring on a new group of wealthy young adults in Manhattan.

The 10-episode series recently resumed filming after a coronavirus-enforced break, and is set to premiere on HBO Max in 2021.
