Pope Francis held an open-air mass in Edmonton on Tuesday, July 26, the second day of what he described as a “penitential pilgrimage” in Canada.
Francis began his tour on Monday by meeting with First Nations, Metis, and Inuit indigenous communities in Maskwacis, where he apologized for the Catholic Church’s role in Canada’s “devastating” policy of Indigenous residential schools.
“I ask forgiveness, in particular, for the ways in which many members of the church and of religious communities co-operated, not least through their indifference, in projects of cultural destruction and forced assimilation promoted by the governments of that time, which culminated in the system of residential schools,” he said, according to a transcript of his apology.
“I humbly beg forgiveness for the evil committed by so many Christians against the Indigenous Peoples.”
