Police used a water cannon and tear gas on the crowd outside the Court of Appeal in Athens, as it ruled on October 7 that the far-right Golden Dawn party was operating as a criminal organization.
The Kathimerini newspaper said that scuffles broke out as the verdict was announced, with a small group throwing projectiles at police, who responded with tear gas and water.
The court ruled that seven of the party’s former elected members, including party leader Nikos Michaloliakos, “were guilty of leading a criminal organization. Others, the paper said, “were guilty of participating in a criminal organization,” the paper said.
Kathimerini estimated more than 15,000 people gathered outside the courthouse to welcome the landmark verdict, which was the result of a five-year trial. Credit: @danaibad via Storyful
