Police in Riot Gear Try to Disperse Large Crowds Gathered in Mong Kok

Large numbers of police in riot gear tried to disperse crowds gathered in Mong Kok, Hong Kong, on May 8, with reports stating that protesters attempted to block roads with garbage and other items.

The crowd gathered in response to scenes of clashes in the Legislative Council’s House Committee meeting earlier in the day.

Reports from the scene in Mong Kok said that police detained groups of people and that tickets were issued to those violating social distancing laws.

Earlier in the day, fights broke out at the Hong Kong Legislative Council over who should preside over the committee. Rival legislators made a dash for the podium seat after pro-Beijing DAB party leader and incumbent House Committee chairwoman Starry Lee claimed it an hour before the meeting was due to start.
