Freezing rain and sleet covered large areas of Western New York in ice overnight into Thursday, February 23, with downed power lines causing outages for more than 25,000 customers in Erie County, officials said on Thursday morning.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said customers in Cheektowaga and West Seneca serviced by New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) were the worst affected, and warned that many streets in the county were icy and dangerous for driving.
