Police Deploy Pepper Spray as Trump Supporters Rally in DC

Police and protesters clashed in Washington’s Black Lives Matter Plaza on Tuesday, January 5, prompting police to deploy pepper spray in order to break up the crowd.

Footage from Brendan Gutenschwager shows the “chaotic scene” in the plaza, with the protesters clashing on either side of police. In this tweet, Gutenschwager wrote: “Mace deployed as police push back into the crowd of Trump supporters trying to get into BLM Plaza”

Local news reported several pro-President Trump rallies had been planned for January 6, the date in which Congress was expected to officially approve the 2020 election results. Washington Mayor Muriel Bower had urged Washingtonians and other local area residents to avoid the downtown area on January 5 and 6.
