Police charge driver in collision that left teen cyclist dead in Ajax last November

Durham police have laid a charge against the driver involved in a collision that left a 13-year-old cyclist dead after she was hit and pinned under an SUV in Ajax last November.

A 44-year-old woman from Ajax was charged with careless driving causing death under the Highway Traffic Act on Monday, Durham police said in a news release.

The collision happened at around 7:35 a.m. on Nov. 7, 2024 on Rossland Road W., between Carter Bennett Drive and Ravenscroft Road, police said at the time.

Police said the driver of a black 2020 Hyundai Sante Fe was travelling southbound on Stevensgate Drive when they struck the teen, who was using a crosswalk near Rossland Road W. The driver remained at the scene after the collision.

The 13-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto, but died later that day.
