PARLIAMENT | Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said he appointed his predecessor Muhyiddin Yassin (Bersatu–Pagoh) as the National Recovery Council (NRC) chairperson because it is a position the latter has held since its inception.
“Pagoh has chaired the council since it was first created, so we gave our trust to Pagoh to continue his duties (in the council),” Ismail Sabri said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He said this while responding to an additional question from Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (Harapan–Kulim-Bandar Baharu) who had asked why Muhyiddin had been appointed as the chairperson of the NRC.
On Sept 4, it was announced that Muhyiddin had been appointed as the NRC chairperson, and this role comes with the status of minister.
Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali had said the appointment was made as the government was confident in Muhyiddin’s ability to spearhead a national recovery strategy.
The NRC was first introduced under Muhyiddin’s administration, along with the National Recovery Plan (NRP), which would gradually re-open sectors as pandemic conditions improve based on three criteria – daily case numbers, hospital capacity and vaccination rate.
After the government and Pakatan Harapan inked a memorandum of understanding yesterday, it was revealed that among the agreements is for the NRC to comprise 50 percent of public and private sector experts.
The government will nominate half of its chosen experts while the opposition will nominate the other half.
