Plans unveiled for new gas power plants in Ukraine by Ukrainian Railways

Yevhen Lyashchenko, Chairman of the Board at Ukrainian Railways, announced plans to construct dozens of gas-fired power plants that will provide up to 250 megawatts (MW) of electricity across various regions, according to Forbes.

The project is set to commence this summer, pending financial backing.

Ukrainian Railways (UZ), recognized as one of Ukraine’s top five distribution companies in terms of network length and flow volumes, aims to generate electricity to meet its substantial needs. "Generating electricity with a total capacity of 250 MW will allow us to partially cover our own requirements for powering critical infrastructure and consumers connected to our distribution network," CEO Oleksandr Kamyshin explained. Currently, Ukrzaliznytsia's total electricity needs amount to 300 MW.

Kamyshin added that the company could begin implementing the project within the next three months. "The timing of the work depends on funding and the availability of the necessary equipment," he stated.

Ukrainian Railways is actively seeking funding sources, including grants and international financial support, and is in talks with equipment suppliers.

In related developments, it was reported that Ukrnafta will start the construction of flexible power generation facilities, utilizing gas piston and gas turbine thermal power plants powered by gas produced concurrently with oil. This initiative will be funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
