Earth had its quietest period in decades due to reduced human activity in 2020
Seismologists from 33 countries
measured a drop of up to 50% in the Earth’s ambient noise
(SOUNDBITE) (English) HEAD OF COMMUNICATION AT SWISS SEISMOLOGICAL SERVICE AT ETH ZURICH, MICHELE MARTI, SAYING: “The reason is less and less people are moving, and there was less traffic, less industries working, and you can see that in the seismic measurements. So, we see that this ambient noise had decreased."
The reduction in background noise during lockdown
resulted in the detection of small earthquakes
that would have otherwise been drowned out
