Plane Passengers Get Bird's-Eye View of Fire Burning on Greek Island

Residents of the Greek island of Rhodes were without electricity and water for periods, and evacuation orders were in place for some areas, after a wildfire broke out on August 1.

Local media said almost the whole island was without electricity for several hours.

The Valley of Butterflies nature park, the Kalamonas military camp and a number of other areas were evacuated, or had evacuation warnings in place.

Fire officials said 103 crew and 20 vehicles were tackling the fire, and said a further 56 firefighters and 14 vehicles would arrive from Piraeus on August 2.
