PKR can't take legal action against me, says Puncak Borneo MP

KUCHING, June 23 — Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin today said that PKR cannot take legal action against him for leaving the party after winning on its ticket in the 14th general election (GE14) in 2018.

He said he did not sign any letter or bond from the party prior to GE14.

“I refused to sign (the letter) last time,” he said when contacted by Malay Mail for his response that PKR may go after “traitors” who left the party in February 2020.

PKR Information Chief Fahmi Fadzil earlier today urged the 10 MPs to heed today’s High Court ruling against former Ampang MP Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin who was ordered to pay the party RM10 million for breaching the bond.

Fahmi, who is also the communications and digital minister, had said that the party had taken action against Zuraida and that its central leadership council might discuss further action against other former members who quit the party after being picked as PKR election candidates and won.

In 2020, PKR sued Zuraida for breaking a bond by leaving the party after winning a seat in the 2018 general election under the party ticket.

During the trial, Zuraida contended that the conditions of the bond violated her constitutional right to associate freely.

Apart from Willie and Zuraida, the other MPs who left PKR were Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (Gombak) Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota), Baru Bian ( Selangau MP), Datuk Kamaruddin Jaffar ( Bandar Tun Razak), Datuk Mansor Othman (Nibong Tebal), Datuk Rashid Hasnon (Batu Pahat), Datuk Seri Dr Santhara Kumar ( Segamat) , Ali Biju (Saratok) and Jonathan Yasin (Ranau).

They had declared that they were leaving PKR and the Pakatan Harapan coalition to form an independent block in Parliament.

After leaving PKR, Willie had said he did not join but was “parked” in Parti Pribumi Malaysia Bersatu (Bersatu) before joining Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) before last year’s general election.

Datuk Ali Biju, however, joined Bersatu while Baru joined Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB).
