'Pistachio' Puppy Born With Rare Green Fur in Sardinia

A rare green dog was born in a litter of five puppies on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia.

In homage to its distinctive green hue, its owner, an Italian farmer Cristian Mallocci, has called the pup Pistachio.

Mallocci’s dog Spelacchia gave birth to four pups with white fur and then Pistachio – whose pigmentation, according to BBC, is caused by coming into contact with a green pigment called biliverdin while in the womb.

Though Pistachio’s greenish color is already beginning to fade, Mallocci told the BBC that he would keep the pup as he believes it will bring him good luck. Credit: Cristian Mallocci via Storyful
