People sought out water and shade as they tried to keep cool during what has been declared the hottest day of the year for the UK so far.
There was a sharp peak of heat and humidity on Monday, with temperatures soaring as high as 34.8C in Cambridge and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issuing several yellow heat health warnings for parts of England.
Temperatures are expected return to average levels on Tuesday, according to the Met Office, which also issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms on Monday for northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Raging wildfires in California and Nevada are forcing the mandatory evacuations of thousands of homes as forecasters warn of a few more days of record-breaking heat for parts of the West.
More than 30,000 protesters gathered in South Korea's capital in broiling heat on Saturday, demanding more aggressive action by the government to combat global warming. They waved large banners reading "Climate justice," "Protect our lives!" and "NO to climate villain (President) Yoon Suk Yeol's administration". Organised by the 907 Climate Justice March Group Committee, the protest followed a ruling last month by South Korea's top court that the nation's climate change law fails to protect basic human rights and lacks targets to shield future generations.
An injured black bear cub survived a 10-hour drive after being found in the middle of a highway in Cochrane, Ontario, over the Labor Day weekend, before being taken in by an animal service. The cub was found by two unidentified men who picked it up and placed it in their van, driving the long distance to Windsor while feeding the animal Taco Bell, CTV News reported. The bear was picked up by the Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR). Its executive director, Myriam Armstrong, said the bear was frightened and listless when it arrived. The bear cub was transported on September 1 to a facility specializing in bear rehabilitation – Bear With Us.“It looked like he’d been hit by a vehicle, which the people who took him back to Windsor surmised,” Bear With Us founder and president Mike McIntosh told CTV News on September 6.McIntosh said the bear was believed to be nine months old and had sustained severe head trauma along with serious body bruises, but no broken bones.“He’s come right around. I wouldn’t say he’s better yet,” McIntosh said. “He still walks like he’s pretty sore, but he’s eating and drinking like a little bear should. I would say he’s probably 80 per cent recovered now.”Footage filmed by Myriam Armstrong shows the bear getting some liquids and food in the back of the van and at their center. There are traditionally five stages of grief, mourning and moving on after the demise of a loved one or a loved-up relationship. When it comes to Hollywood, however, there’s at least six—you can’t forget sideboob. Case in point: At the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday night, Jennifer Lopez had clearly taken inspiration from the phrase, “you don’t know what you’re missing.” (Or, rather, you do now and it’s a sexy disco ball.)Lopez was in attendance for the premiere of her new film “U
