A 30-year-old Pictou County man is facing five charges after colliding with a police vehicle while driving an ATV in New Glasgow, N.S., on Sunday night.

Const. Ken MacDonald of the New Glasgow Regional Police says the driver of the ATV was driving on a nearby walking trail without a helmet and circling around commercial parking lots of a local restaurant and a movie theatre at the Aberdeen Centre.

"Under those conditions, including the time of night and the pedestrian traffic, increased the risk to public safety," MacDonald said.

MacDonald says police tried to stop the ATV. The driver of the ATV made an attempt to flee from the police and collided with a police vehicle in the process.

The driver is now facing charges including dangerous operation and flight from a peace office.

He was released on conditions and will return to Pictou Provincial Court on Dec. 2, 2024.
