Photos show the biggest moments from the State of the Union
President Joe Biden's State of the Union address criticized Trump without mentioning his name.
Photos show moments Biden was heckled by Marjorie Taylor Greene and another lawmaker's guest.
Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Cori Bush held signs calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war.
With statement outfits, interruptions by hecklers, and President Joe Biden's swipes at his "predecessor," this year's State of the Union featured several standout moments.
Here's a photo recap of some of the most memorable scenes from the 2024 address on Thursday.
President Joe Biden delivered a fiery State of the Union address, criticizing former President Donald Trump several times without mentioning his name.
Referring to him only as "my predecessor," Biden slammed Trump's deference to Russian President Vladimir Putin, support for overturning Roe v. Wade, and continued false claims of a "stolen" election.
Biden also alluded to Trump while addressing concerns about his age.
"Now some other people my age see differently, the American story of revenge, resentment, and retribution," he said. "That's not me."
Members of the Democratic Women's Caucus wore white in a statement supporting women's rights and reproductive freedom.
"Our message is clear: women must be able to access the healthcare they need to control their own lives and futures," Lois Frankel, the chair of the Democratic Women's Caucus, said in a statement.
The block of white outfits created a noticeable divide in the House chamber.
Members of the Democratic Women's Caucus have also worn white to the State of the Union in past years in nods to the women's suffrage movement.
George Santos crashed the State of the Union and announced he's running for Congress again despite his expulsion last year.
Former members of Congress can still walk onto the House floor. In between mingling with Reps. Matt Gaetz of Florida and Tim Burchett of Tennessee, the disgraced ex-congressman announced he's launching a primary campaign to unseat Rep. Nick LaLota of New York's 1st district.
In his speech, Biden acknowledged women whose lives have been impacted by the overturning of Roe v. Wade and vowed to restore it as 'the law of the land.'
In February, an Alabama judge ruled that frozen embryos are people, halting in-vitro-fertilization treatments throughout the state. Latorya Beasley, a social worker from Alabama, was unable to proceed with her IVF treatments for a second child.
In December, Kate Cox sued the state of Texas for the ability to end her pregnancy when her fetus was found to have a fatal condition that could endanger her ability to get pregnant again. She ultimately had to seek care out of state.
Both women were guests of first lady Jill Biden at the State of the Union.
As she has in past years, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene heckled Biden during his address. This time, Biden responded.
As Biden discussed the bipartisan border deal that was blocked by Senate Republicans, Greene repeatedly shouted, "Say her name," in reference to Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student at the University of Georgia in Athens who was killed in February. A Venezuelan man who entered the US illegally in 2022 was charged with murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and kidnapping in connection with her death, The New York Times reported.
As Greene continued yelling, Biden went off-script and responded to her directly, holding up a pin with Riley's name worn by several Republican lawmakers in the House chamber.
"Laken Riley, an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal. That's right," Biden said, mispronouncing her name as "Lincoln."
He also expressed his condolences to Riley's parents, "having lost children myself."
Biden's use of the term "illegal" dismayed some Democrats.
"As a proud immigrant, I'm extremely disappointed to hear President Biden use the word 'illegal,'" Rep. Chuy Garcia, a Democratic lawmaker from Illinois, wrote on X.
Republican lawmakers weren't the only ones shouting at Biden. A disruptive guest invited by Rep. Brian Mast of Florida was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor.
As Biden said, "All Americans deserve the freedom to be safe, and America is safer today than when I took office," Mast's guest, Steve Nikoui, yelled "Abbey Gate" and "United States Marines" and was removed from the gallery.
Nikoui, whose son was killed in a 2021 bombing at Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghanistan, was arrested and charged with the misdemeanor of crowding, obstructing, or incommoding, Axios reported.
"The Sergeant at Arms is holding my State of the Union guest for yelling at @POTUS in protest because his son was killed in action at the Abbey Gate due to Biden's incompetence," Mast wrote on X. "So much for the right to petition our government for the redress of grievances."
Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Cori Bush held signs calling for a cease-fire as Biden spoke about Israel and Gaza.
Wearing traditional Palestinian keffiyehs, Tlaib and Bush held signs reading "Stop Sending Bombs" and "Lasting Ceasefire Now." Tlaib was also seen wiping away tears during the speech.
In his address, Biden called on Israel to allow more aid into Gaza and expressed support for a two-state solution.
"There is no other path that guarantees Israel's security and democracy," he said. "There is no other path that guarantees Palestinians can live with peace and dignity. There is no other path that guarantees peace between Israel and all of its neighbors."
US support for Israel amid the war with Hamas and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains a divisive issue among the Democratic party's progressive wing, with some primary voters casting "uncommitted" ballots in protest.
