This Morning's Phillip Schofield has opened up on the extent to which his co-host Holly Willoughby has helped and supported him over the past year.

Speaking to host Chris Evans on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio today (October 23), the presenter became tearful as he paid tribute to his close friend and colleague Holly for her support of him and his wife Stephanie Lowe after he came out as gay.

"Holly has been astonishing. Literally, the best mate," he said. "She's serene, she's calming and sensible and she's balanced. Not just for me but also for Steph."

Phillip, who also hosts The Million Pound Cube and Dancing on Ice, added that he has recently found himself able to laugh more again, particularly when he's spending time with his co-star.

"I just wasn't me anymore. I lost me. And I still haven't found me, if I'm honest," he said. "I've tried all the way through this – writing the book and in the few interviews that I'm doing – to be as honest as I possibly can be. And I don't know that I've necessarily found me yet. And I think it's okay for me to look.

"I have recently found myself finding it easier to laugh more – it's always funny with Holly, we always laugh anyway. But you think, 'Oh that feels nice to laugh, that feels better'. So finding me is the goal for the moment."

Phillip also told Chris about the day that he travelled down to Cornwall to see his mum to tell her that he was gay.

"She knew I was coming and she knew something was up," he said. "I have floaters in my eyes which drive me crazy. I don't talk about them very much... this is like a filthy bathroom window drifting in front of my vision...

"So we had our fish and chips and I said, 'Mum, I have something to tell you' so she said, 'Okay, alright' and I said 'I'm gay'. And she went: 'Oh thank god – I thought you were going blind!'"

Phillip recently released his autobiography Life's What You Make It in which he writes about his journey towards coming out, including details of the day when he dropped out of hosting This Morning just before going on air because he "couldn't do the show".

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
