PGA betting: How to bet Max Homa at the Players Championship

The PGA stays in Florida for the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. One of the bigger events of the year, 43 of the top 50 players on the Official World Golf Rankings will be in the field. The Pete Dye designed course is a par 72 that runs 7,275 yards.

It can be a challenging course with bunkers, mounds, water hazards and trees — all strategically placed to make your round uncomfortable. With that considered, I’m backing players that are solid off the tee but more so looking at strong iron players and those who have proven they can contend in events with strong fields.

Here is one full tournament head-to-matchup to bet. These are 3-0-1.

Max Homa -130 vs. Xander Schauffele

Homa has been steadily strong this year with three top-five finishes in five tournaments played, including winning the Farmers Insurance Open in January. Twice he has gained over eight strokes on approach, while gaining strokes from tee to green in every event played since the Masters last April. Even more of a benefit, Homa has largely improved his putting, losing strokes in just four of his last 19 tournaments.

Typically, Schauffele is the model for consistency on tour. However, he’s been a bit off in the last two tournaments. Xander lost four strokes around the green two weeks ago and last week lost three strokes off the tee. A player losing strokes from tee to green but gaining with his putter is somebody I want to fade, especially with a course layout like TPC Sawgrass. Plus, Schauffele has three straight missed cuts at the Players Championship, losing strokes either off the tee or with his putting. I wouldn’t be surprised if he missed another cut, which you can find for +240 on BetMGM.
