Pet abduction could be made a new criminal offence in England under new government proposals outlined today. It follows a rise in the reported theft of animals, especially dogs, during the Covid pandemic. Lockdown saw a rise in pet ownership with more people working from home. While the price of some dog breeds has soared by nearly 90% making dog theft more lucrative to criminals. A pet theft task force found that 2,000 dogs were reportedly stolen in 2020. Ministers hope the proposals will make it more difficult for people to abduct and sell pets. .
