Marcus Rashford has the ability to be the “perfect attacker” for Manchester United and can score 250 goals for the Red Devils.

That’s according to Owen Hargreaves, who waxed lyrical over the 24-year-old after he came off the bench to score his sixth goal of the season in the 3-0 win over FC Sheriff on Thursday.

“His overall play and link-up play has improved over the years,” Hargreaves told BT Sport. “Goals will come, 99 at 24 is amazing. By the time he finishes he could have 250 goals for Manchester United.

“He is a quality player and has so much attacking ability to be the perfect attacker. His confidence has been hit with the addition of all these different players and he has not played all the time. He just needs to be a bit more consistent in front of goal and I think they will fly in the more he plays under Ten Hag.”

Paul Scholes was similarly impressed, but believes Rashford has work to do to improve his finishing.

“It’s not just the goals but it’s the appearances as well,” added Scholes. “The lad burst onto the scene when people did not really expect him to. He does get a little bit of stick for his finishing, he likes to smash the ball a lot and not so much placing it into the corners.

“I think he can develop that, he is still young and only 24 years old and he would like to score more goals. He is not someone that relies on other players, he can go past a man and create a chance for himself.”

Asked why he hooked Antony at half-time, Erik ten Hag said it wasn’t because of the Brazilian’s “ridiculous” trick but as he wanted to see Rashford in combination with Cristiano Ronaldo.

“The second half, I wanted to see that, Cristiano and Marcus close together in the No 9 and 10 position and I think it can be a trap for opponents,” Ten Hag said.

“It is always difficult against such players to defend that and we have seen that.

“They can take benefit from each other. It was also good to see for the right side when Bruno [Fernandes] went out and you get a different dynamic on the right as well, so I’ve seen some positive points in this game.”
