Penny Farthing bike race returns to Maryland

Over 40 ‘Penny Farthing’ enthusiasts raced through Maryland
at the annual National Clustered Spires High Wheel Race

“I am a lifelong cyclist so anything on bicycles is fun. The primary appeal to this, to me for this race is just the group of people that it brings together. I can’t imagine any other event that brings this group of people together. “
Some of these bikes date back to the 19th century
The Penny Farthing was popular in the 1870s and 80s
and nicknamed after its unique design
The front wheel resembles the British penny coin
while the smaller farthing coin represents the back

“It is a lot of work, this is a young man’s sport. Boy, these guys were lapping me like I was standing still. And yeah, I’m just happy I just survived my heat, and I’m good.”
