Pengerang Set To Be A Smart City

After being upgraded to Pengerang Municipal Council (MPP) in November last year, Johor’s Pengerang is now poised to become a smart city within five years.

This comes as a 121ha area in the district’s southern part had been designated as a smart city zone where early development should comply with Malaysia Smart City Framework’s guidelines.

Aside from Pengerang, five other cities were considered as pioneer cities to achieve the Malaysia Smart City Framework. They were Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Kulim, Kedah, reported Bernama.

“Compared to other cities, Pengerang was drafted through strategic planning as a new development area towards becoming a smart city beginning with the provision of infrastructure. Work on the 21ha area was extensively planned,” said Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin, after flagging off two electric-powered cars for MMP’s use.

She noted that the changes of the other cities to becoming smart cities will be implemented in stages, taking into account the cities’ existing infrastructural situation like road and traffic light systems.

During the launch of the Malaysia Smart City Framework, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad reportedly said that turning Malaysia into a ‘smart city’ was among the priority items under the government’s 12th Malaysia Plan (RMKe-12).

The Prime Minister explained that the vision for smart cities was the integration of sustainable technology in city services that will improve public safety as well as people’s quality of life, such as 5G connections, efficient public transport, cashless communities, energy-efficient buildings and smart waste management.

Meanwhile, Zuraida said the use of the electric car was a pioneering effort to transforming Pengerang into a smart and sustainable city.

As for public transport, she revealed that electric buses would be used by MPP to ferry passengers within the municipality. Perisind Samudra Sdn Bhd, the firm responsible for the municipal infrastructure, would provide the buses.
