GEORGE TOWN, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- Penang marks the beginning of Experience Penang Year 2020 by introducing a new direct flight between Penang and Taiwan by Starlux Airlines, with its commencement flight scheduled for Jan 23.
The airline’s maiden flight Airbus A321neo is expected to depart from Taoyuan International Airport on Jan 23 and arrive at Penang International Airport about four and a half hours after departure.
Speaking at a press conference here today, Penang Tourism, Arts, Culture and Heritage (PETACH) Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said Penang is the only location in Malaysia chosen for the flight from the airport in New Taipei City.
“We are proud that Penang is one of the three international cities selected,” he said, referring to the two other cities, Macau (China) and Da Nang (Vietnam).
He said that PETACH had been working closely with the airline headquarters since last June to facilitate the commencement of the direct flight.

Meanwhile, Starlux Airlines Co Ltd (Malaysia Branch) general manager Chin-wen Hsu, who also attended the press conference, said prior to the decision to implement the Penang-Taiwan direct flight, they had surveyed the tourism environment in Penang and saw a great potential market in it.
“Through the survey, we found out that other airlines operating a direct flight between Penang and Taiwan have about 80 per cent full capacity of passengers annually in 2017 and 2018.
“Hopefully, we can work together with PETACH and Penang Global Tourism to make Penang a better tourism environment and also (welcome potential) investment area,” he said.
