GEORGE TOWN, March 9 (Bernama) -- Penang will be hosting the 24th World Chinese Evergreen Cup football tournament from Sept 22-27.
The competition endorsed by the World Chinese Football Association (WCFA) would be the second time Malaysia was selected as a host after 2012 in Johor.
State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said the event will be held at few locations namely Batu Kawan Stadium, Penang City Stadium, Padang Polo and Penang Sports Club.
"The tournament is open to 32 teams from around the world and is divided into five categories. To date, 26 teams have registered," he told a press conference, here today.
The five categories to be contested are 45 years, 50 years, 55 years, 60 years and above 65 years.

He said the state government through the State Executive Council Meeting (MMK) for Youth and Sports and Penang Sports Council, are collaborating with Penang Chinese Football Association (PCFA) as the organiser and Hunza Properties Berhad as the main sponsor.
In the meantime, Soon said the tournament would be held according to the original plan despite the increasing number of COVID-19 cases.
"As the tournament is taking place in September, there are no plans at the moment to cancel it. We will wait until June or July (on the development of COVID-19)...any decision (on the tournament cancellation) will be made by PCFA," he said.
Meanwhile, PCFA president Tai Lee Leong noted that among the participating countries for the tournament are the United States of America, China, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Spain, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia.
