KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the International Aid for the Protection and Welfare of Animals' (IAPWA) fund raising project is back.

Instead of a food fair that was held in November of 2018 and 2019, this year's event will be a pet carnival.

It still promises to be a lot of fun for owners and their pets.

IAPWA president Choong Koon Yean said due to time constraints, the organisation decided to have a carnival.

“When we had the food fair, we would start planning in May. But for this year's carnival, planning only started in August,” she said, adding that the pandemic threw the organisation's plans into a disarray.

Speaking to Malay Mail, Choong said they nearly did not have the event as they were unsure if such events could be held.

“Initially we wanted to call it off but payment for the event venue had been made so my committee said we should just continue,” she added, noting that due to the short notice, the organisation also reduced the targeted amount to raise.

“In our first two food fairs, we managed to raise RM70,000 and RM100,000 respectively. For this year's carnival, we are setting a modest target of RM30,000.”

Elaborating further about the event, Choong said it will be everything about pets.

“There will be a total of 30 booths with only five of them selling human grade food while the rest will be pet related services.”

At least two veterinarians will also be present to give talks while there will also be a games booth for dogs, added Choong.

Choong said all amount raised from the carnival will go towards their Trap, Neuter, Release and Manage (TNRM) programme.

One of the booth operators SY Cheah said she would be selling doggie grade pastries and treats during the carnival.

“There will be pizzas, meat loafs, curry puffs and quiches,” she said, adding that this was her first time participating in a fundraising event organised by IAPWA.

The Selangor-based dog food producer said she supported the TNRM programme as promoted by IAPWA.

“TNRM is the only way to control the population of strays,” she said.

Transactions for the carnival will be cash terms or through e-wallets.
