KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has rejected a news report claiming caretaker Kedah menteri besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has been arrested again.

PDRM corporate communications head ACP A. Skandaguru said Sanusi was neither arrested nor called in for questioning as reported.

“No party from Bukit Aman, the Kedah police either at the contingent or district headquarter level conducted the action stated in the news report,” he said in a statement tonight.

“PDRM asks that Astro Awani, which published this false news, to issue an apology and retraction over the report.”

The police official added that false news could potentially cause panic among the public, especially given that campaigning for six state elections were ongoing.

Earlier today, Astro Awani published an article online titled “PRN: Sanusi ditahan polis sekali lagi?” (Sanusi arrested by the police again?)

Despite the interrogatory title, the report claimed that a source confirmed that Sanusi was arrested by officers from the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman.

Sanusi had been arrested last month prior to being charged with two counts of sedition over remarks about the sultan of Selangor’s choice of Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari as his mentri besar.

Sanusi is also currently at the centre of a scandal over the alleged theft of rare earth elements in his state.
