Paratici proposal rejected with Antonio Conte saving Tottenham blushes as World Cup winner’s Man Utd exit strategy revealed
A pundit claims Paul Pogba wanted to join Tottenham when he become a free agent last summer but Antonio Conte vetoed the idea.
Pogba, 29, opted to run down his Old Trafford contract after six years at the club. It was the France international’s second spell at the Theatre of Dreams after an initial stint ended with a move to Juventus. The same thing happened this time around as the powerful midfielder opted for a return to Turin.
It has not worked out as planned, however, as injury has seen him feature for just 35 minutes to date.
He was ruled out of the 2022 World Cup due to a knee injury and has recently been eased back into the fold at club level.
The World Cup winner made his comeback against Torino late last month and also featured against Roma on March 5. But it appears as though he could have been playing in the Premier League.
It always looked as though the Frenchman would re-join the Old Lady. And he duly returned to the Juventus Stadium despite interest from elsewhere.
Tottenham were linked and it seems as though they could have got their man.
However, according to former Bari star and now pundit, Massimo Brambati, Conte knocked back the idea of Pogba moving to north London.
“I know that his first choice was Antonio Conte’s Tottenham but the technician said no to Paratici about this option,” he told TMW.
Pogba attitude leaves Conte looking elsewhere
There is no question that Pogba is a talented player. He showed glimpses of it for United while shining for Les Bleus on many occasions.
However, his second stint at the Theatre of Dreams could never be described as a total success. He went missing in far too many games and did not exert the expected influence.
There was also the infamous fall out with then manager Jose Mourinho, with questions raised over his attitude.
In the end, it was a disappointing exit for a player that cost the north-west giants £93m.
Many pundits got stuck into Pogba and the way he behaved. Former Red Devils striker Louis Saha felt he would never be considered a United legend.
Despite all the negativity, the Old Trafford outfit did want to keep him beyond last summer.
But he refused to sign a new deal and left the club for free. He scored 39 goals from 226 appearances in all competitions for the Premier League outfit.
But that was clearly not enough for Conte to take a punt that he might recapture his best form wearing white.
Juventus regretting Pogba capture
Pogba has yet to make any significant contribution back with the Serie A giants. And a report in the Daily Mail last month suggested they are already looking to move him on.
A transfer stateside to play in MLS has been suggested. That would be an easier option for the schemer, with the top US football league nowhere near the standard of its European counterparts.
It would be an embarrassing move for the man with 91 France caps.
Despite its popularity, MLS has traditionally been seen as a league where Europe’s players go as they approach retirement.
