For decades, Papyrus has been a ubiquitous greeting card destination in shopping malls across the country. Now, it’s the latest retailer to join the brick-and-mortar retail apocalypse, announcing that all of its stores will be shuttered.

Schurman Fine Paper, which runs Papyrus, filed for bankruptcy in a Delaware court last week. According to The Wall Street Journal, Papyrus’s operator attributes the bankruptcy to industry downturn and operational and performance problems. By the end of February, the greeting card company will close all of its retail stores in the United States and Canada, and about 1,000 employees will lose their jobs.

Papyrus confirmed the news with a statement posted on both its Facebook and Instagram. “Schurman Retail Group wants to thank you, our wonderful customers for so many years of loyal patronage,” the post says. “Unfortunately, we regret that we are closing our stores. We hope that through our artistic, thoughtful greeting cards and our personal expression products that we were able to inspire you to celebrate and honor the special people in your lives, creating meaningful moments along the way.”

Loyal customers commented on the post, asking if Papyrus cards will still be available at other retailers. The company responded: “Unfortunately, we can’t address this as American Greetings controls the future of the Papyrus brand.”

Want to stock up on greeting cards, stationery, and gift wrap before all the Papyrus stores are shuttered? Right now, there are major markdowns in stores and at online…all sales are final, though.
