Paolo Montalban says Brandy's “Descendants: The Rise of Red” entrance gave him flashbacks to 1997 “Cinderella”

"She just kind of emerged like the beautiful, glorious queen that she is," Montalban tells EW of filming with his former costar again.

Paolo Montalban was already feeling nostalgic when he stepped onto the set of Descendants: The Rise of Red since he and Brandy were reuniting to reprise their roles from Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella for the new movie musical. But then things really felt like 1997 all over again when Brandy filmed her epic entrance, and Montalban got flashbacks to the first time she made her debut as Cinderella almost 30 years ago.

"There's actually this one moment — and everyone's going to get to see — it's Brandy's/Cinderella's reveal," Montalban told Entertainment Weekly at Wednesday's red carpet premiere for the new Descendants movie. "And it reminded me of the moment when Brandy appeared at the top of the staircase in the '97 Cinderella."

Montalban praised his costar and onscreen wife for once again making an iconic entrance. "In this movie, Descendants: The Rise of Red, she appears at the top of the hill, where our house is, but it was raining that day," he says. "So she parted the mist, and she just kind of emerged like the beautiful, glorious queen that she is."

And Montalban can't get over how just three years ago, EW reunited the cast of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella for its 25th anniversary, and at the time, he and Brandy both thought it would be impossible for them to play Cinderella and Prince Christopher together again. Now here they are, celebrating their onscreen reunion as Queen Cinderella and King Charming, now parents to Chloe Charming (Malia Baker).

"I want to thank Entertainment Weekly for making that reunion possible," Montalban said. "And just to know that Brandy and I were in the hearts of all these fans for all these years, you can't even comprehend what it means to be a part of that."

The actor also revealed what he took from this movie's set to keep forever — although you won't ever see his keepsake onscreen. "There's a piece of fabric that they thought that they were going to use for the costume and I just took a little clipping of that," he admitted with a laugh. "That's the only memento, even though it's not in the movie, I know where it's from."

The fourth installment of the Descendants franchise (premiering Friday on Disney+) follows the next generation of Villain Kids, a.k.a. the children of iconic Disney characters. Kylie Cantrall plays Red, the rebellious daughter of the ruthless Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora).

Red is forced to team up with Chloe, the perfectionist daughter of Cinderella and King Charming, when her tyrannical mother incites a coup against Auradon, leading the duo to travel back in time to undo the traumatic event that set Red’s mother down her villainous path.
