After Malaysia's Kuantan beach saw a spike in popularity due to its mention in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, and a certain spoiler-y event, it seems that the local state government is taking full advantage of it.

During the Pahang state legislative assembly on Wednesday (6 Dec), Pahang exco member and unity, tourism and culture committee chairman Leong Yu Man said that the Pahang government was trying to contact the creator through the Japanese government.

Jujutsu Kaisen is created by Gege Akutami, but that is the author's pen name and their real identity remains unknown.

According to The Star, Leong shared that they intend to take advantage of this opportunity to promote Kuantan and its beaches.

She said, “We hope the creators of the anime can endorse the beach further so that it will be a tourist attraction for anime fans across the world.”

Leong also referenced the fact that a landmark was even created on Google Maps after the airing of the episode to reinforce the attention the beach has received.

Her remarks were in response to a question on the efforts of the state government on turning the beaches in Tanjung Lumpur into top tourist destinations.

What is Kuantan's relation to Jujutsu Kaisen?

For the uninitiated, the reason for Kuantan beach’s sudden burst of popularity is linked to a major spoiler in Jujutsu Kaisen.

If you’re still here, then read on at your own risk.

In episode 42 of the anime series, fan-favourite character Kento Nanami meets his grisly end at the hand of his archrival.

However, before his death, he mentions Kuantan in Malaysia, and expresses his wish to go and build a house there.

Many fans posted on X to commemorate his death. Someone even created the Kento Nanami Memorial Shine landmark on Google Maps, though it has since been removed.

At one point, the landmark received 149 reviews - all of them 5-stars - comprising fans saying their goodbyes.
