Fernando Tatis Jr. homers vs. Dodgers in first game back from IL

Fernando Tatis Jr. returned on Friday, just in time for a date every San Diego Padres fan had circled on their calendar. He didn't disappoint.

The Padres activated their star shortstop Friday, hours before the opener of their first series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Rookie Tucupita Marcano was optioned to make roster room for Tatis:

Five innings later, Tatis made his presence known:

A dead-center homer off Walker Buehler. Not bad. Unfortunately for Tatis and the Padres, the rest was, well, bad. Tatis ended up 1-for-6 in the game, the one hit being the homer, with two strikeouts (one with the bases loaded in the 10th inning) and five men left on base. Worse were two critical errors — one to give the Dodgers the lead in the third inning, the other costing the Padres a double play in the 11th inning.

The Dodgers eventually came out on top, 12-6, after 12 innings and five hours of baseball.

Fernando Tatis Jr. missed little time

Tatis had been out since April 5 after sustaining a shoulder injury while swinging at the plate. An MRI later revealed he had dislocated his shoulder with some slight labral tearing, which was good news given worries about his shoulder, but still required a trip to the IL.

That IL stint ended up taking the minimum 10 days, with Tatis missing nine games. The Padres went 6-3 in that span.

While Tatis has been activated, there may still be concern about his shoulder. It has been a recurring issue since Tatis was in rookie ball in 2016, and reappeared during spring training this year when he had to exit a game. Even slight labrum injuries can be a major concern, though the Padres doctors are comfortable with him playing.
