  • Over 2,000 cases (12,000 individual cartons) of Great Value Chicken Broth sold at Walmart are being recalled.

  • The recall affects 242 stores across nine states.

  • “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” the retailer said in a statement.

Over 2,000 cases of family-sized, 48-ounce cartons of Great Value Chicken Broth were recalled by their Canadian manufacturer, according to a report recently published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Walmart-exclusive broth was pulled from the supply line because of packaging errors that “could compromise the sterility of the product, resulting in spoilage,” the report said.

The recall took effect on December 11, but was only just published by the FDA, and is still ongoing. It affects 242 stores in nine states including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas, Walmart revealed. The recall noted that a case contains six cartons, which means over 12,000 individual cartons of broth were recalled.

“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” a spokesperson for the retailer told USA Today in a statement. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted (products) from … select, impacted stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”

The recalled products, which were produced by Tree House Foods, are marked with the best-used by date of March 25, 2006 and feature a batch/lot code of 98F09234 and a UPC of 007874206684. Walmart said users with impacted goods should not consume them and throw them away. Affected customers can also request a full refund.

This marks the second food recall to emerge from Walmart stores this month after packaged fresh broccoli was recalled due to listeria concerns.

Why are there so many food recalls lately?

If you feel like you’ve noticed lots of recall headlines as of late, you’re not imagining things. Food safety experts previously told Prevention that the influx may be attributed to our increased reliance on ready-to-eat foods, sanitation problems, staffing issues, the complexity of our global food supply chain, and food safety inspection advancements that allow the FDA and companies to detect danger or inconsistency more often.

Even so, the number of recalls hasn’t dramatically increased. “According to the data published by the FDA, there have not been more food and beverage recalls compared to last year,” Wade Syers, D.Soc.Sci., a statewide Michigan State University Extension food safety specialist previously said. They’re simply being more discussed and covered by media outlets because there’s a rising interest in them.
