‘The Outsiders’ Star Brody Grant Returning to Tony-Nominated Role After Month-Long Hiatus
Brody Grant, the Tony-nominated star of “The Outsiders,” is returning to the musical after a month-long hiatus. An exact date has not been finalized but representatives for the show said he will be back “at a performance next week.”
Reps did not give a reason for Grant’s extended absence but said in a statement, “‘The Outsiders’ is a very demanding project. He needed time away and is returning next week. As with any long-running shows, our performers regularly take time away, when needed, to recharge and reset.”

“The Outsiders,” a rough-and-tumble musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s 1967 novel that also inspired the 1983 Francis Ford Coppola movie, opened on Broadway on April 11, 2024. It was nominated for 14 Tony Awards and won four, including the prize for best musical. Though reviews were mixed, ticket sales have been strong and “The Outsiders” has been regularly playing to sold-out houses.
Grant plays Ponyboy Curtis, a teenager who grows up on the wrong side of the tracks in Tulsa in the 1960s. The coming-of-age story follows two rival gangs, the working-class “Greasers” (of which Ponyboy counts himself a member) and the upper-class “Socs.” The Broadway cast includes Sky Lakota-Lynch as Johnny Cade, Brent Comer as Darrell Curtis, Jason Schmidt as Sodapop Curtis, Joshua Boone as Dallas Winston and Emma Pittman as Cherry Valance.
Angelina Jolie is among the producers of the musical, directed by Danya Taymor. “The Outsiders” features a book by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine, with music and lyrics by the folk duo of Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance, known as Jamestown Revival. A North American tour is planned to kick off in Tulsa, Okla. in 2025.
