Outlander spoilers follow for season 5, episode 7.

Outlander star Duncan Lacroix has addressed the possibility of making a return to the series following Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser's heartbreaking exit.

Despite surviving much longer than he did in Diana Gabaldon's novels, Murtagh finally lost his life in Sunday's episode (March 29), during a pre-Revolutionary War battle.

Speaking to Collider, Lacroix revealed how he learnt about his character's unfortunate demise.

"I found out just before the beginning of the season... because I was optioned for six seasons. But yeah, it kind of finally ran its course and they dropped the bomb on me before we started filming the season."

Murtagh's presence will certainly be missed in the series going forward, and unfortunately it doesn't look like he'll get to make some sort of miraculous comeback.

When asked about the possibility, Lacroix laughed it off and said: "I don't know about that!"

As fans of the books will know, Murtagh died much earlier in the novels, at the Battle of Culloden, which took place in the TV series at the end of season two.

However, the character proved to be so popular with fans that he returned for season three as Jamie's fellow prisoner in Ardsmuir, before appearing again in season four as a Wilmington blacksmith.

Outlander season 5 airs on Starz in the US. The show streams on Amazon Prime in the UK.
