Outgoing Chilean president congratulates Boric

"I want to congratulate you and wish you the best of success in your government," Pinera said from the La Moneda Palace in a conference broadcast on Chilean television.

During the talk, Boric highlighted the importance of respecting republican traditions and insisted on strengthening democracy in the South American country.

"I think it is essential to respect the republican traditions... We have to maintain and strengthen the democracy among all of us."

With over 99 percent of ballots counted, Boric, 35, who leads a broad leftist coalition, had nearly 56 percent of the vote, compared with 44 percent for far-right rival Jose Antonio Kast, who conceded defeat.

The election was the nation's most divisive in decades, with the two candidates offering starkly different visions of the future.
