Othman Hafsham on possible "Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu" reboot: It'd be difficult

17 Oct – Othman Hafsham doesn't think it would be easy to remake his most popular sitcom, "Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu" to suit this generation.

The filmmaker, who was asked about a reboot as fans turned nostalgic following the wedding of its two stars Sabri Yunus and Angeline Tan, stated that a lot of the stars of the sitcom have already passed away, including Ahmad Busu (Mat Deris), Zami Ismail (Pak Uda) and Mohammad Abdullah (Pak Busu).

"They are the people who made the show what it is now. So, it's difficult for me to remake the sitcom and turn it into what it was in the past. I don't even know if any TV station would want it," he said.

At the same time, Othman believes that the differences in terms of how production works nowadays would also make it challenging.

"I don't think there is any actor who is interested to work in a sitcom that needs a lot of work and rehearsals. And there's also the question of payment. If we are to reboot the show, the payment has to match the current era. That could be difficult what with the economy now," he said.

"Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu" aired on TV3 from 1983 until 2004, with 1,210 episodes in 17 seasons. Aside from Sabri Yunus and Angeline Tan, it also stars Imuda, Marlia Musa, Khatijah Tan, Sathiya, and Sulaiman Yassin among others.
