Otherland Just Released a Line of Candles That Will Take You Right Back to the '90s
It may be 2020, but nostalgia for the '90s and early aughts just keeps on coming—and as a 1990 baby myself, I've been living for it. Fashion trends coming back into style and TV reboots are one thing, though, but scents are a whole other, powerful factor when it comes to sinking into the comfort of those throwback vibes. And Otherland, the hip, cult-favorite candle brand known for its stunning packaging and perfectly-mixed scents, has really hit the '90s nail on the head with a new collection that just launched today.
"Scent is the strongest trigger of memory," explains Abigail Cook Stone, Otherland's CEO and co-founder. "One whiff can instantly transport you, surfacing emotions and memories from long ago. As we cope with the stress of—and unrest with—today's modern, increasingly-digital world, I was inspired to escape back to my childhood."
And these candles certainly are an escape. The scents take you back to a time of butterfly hair clips and frosted eyeshadow; a time when ordering from the Delia's catalog was a rite of passage and furnishing your room with a glittery inflatable chair from Limited Too was all the rage. Back when Britney Spears took over the world—or at least the music industry—and your biggest concern was which N'Sync member was the best (you might think it's JT, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it: Justice for JC!).
"Otherland's first nostalgia-inspired collection is a daydream of the 90s: Everyone’s favorite decade of carefree optimism," Stone says. "[It takes you] back to simpler times when the internet was new and Clarissa could explain it all."
The Carefree '90s collection, Stone says, takes inspiration from things like Cher Horowitz's pink feather pen in Clueless; your favorite, perfectly-washed jeans from back in the day; and of course, your effortlessly cool babysitter who always wore sparkly strawberry lip gloss. It includes three scents:
Dreamlight: Notes of wild freesia, plush plumeria, and juicy tangerine. Or, as Otherland puts it, "Put on your best platforms and body glitter as notes of wild freesia and plumeria combine to channel your inner Gap girl pop princess."
Glosspop: Strawberry gloss, hard candy, and frosted rose combine to "have you longing for pastel manicures and Sabrina the Teenage Witch marathons."
Blue Jean Baby: "Inspired by those perfect Calvins and nights spent with your best friends, and doodling your crush's name [with] gel roller pens on your trapper keeper," this one has notes of washed denim, white musk, and mimosa flower.
