In case you haven't noticed, it's hot out. "Like, Africa hot. Tarzan couldn't take this kind of hot." (Name the movie reference.) Need some extra airflow? An oscillating fan can make a huge difference.

Amazon is home to dozens of them, with prices ranging from around $60 on up to $165 and higher. But how much do you really need to spend to beat the heat? I'll make the case for the Pelonis PFS40D8AWW, an adjustable 16-inch oscillating fan currently on sale for $60. Regular price: $80.

Why this model? For starters, it earned a 4.6-star average rating from nearly 4,000 buyers — about as good an endorsement as a product can get. I mention that because although I haven't tried this fan myself, I'm comfortable recommending it based on those numbers.

The Pelonis is height-adjustable and able to oscillate 85 degrees side-to-side. It offers 12 speed settings, chosen via a rotating dial on both the remote and the fan's control panel, and you can likewise program it to automatically shut off after 1-12 hours.

Like most pedestal fans, this one can be tilted up or down to better direct air where you want it — at the floor, for example, if you're down there on an exercise mat.

Looking for a slightly cheaper option? This Lasko S16612 pedestal fan is on sale for $52. It's another 16-inch model, but with fewer speeds, three blades (to the Pelonis' five) and only a 7-hour timer. My take: It's worth the extra few dollars for the Pelonis fan's extra few features.
